Australian cricket great Michael Slater has been charged with assaulting a police officer following an alleged domestic violence incident.

The 53-year-old was arrested at a home in Noosa Heads, near the Sunshine Coast, at about midnight on Friday.

Police were called to the property over the alleged DV matter and a medical incident.

They will allege Slater obstructed police and assaulted an officer, who suffered a small cut to his hand.

No one else was physically injured.

The former test cricketer and commentator will appear in Noosa Magistrates Court on May 2.

A spokesperson for Slater did not want to comment when approached by Daily Mail Australia.

Slater played in 74 Tests for Australia, scoring 5312 runs at an average of 42.83 after making his debut during the 1993 Ashes tour of England.

He also played 42 one-day internationals before retiring from major cricket in 2004 and embarking on a successful commentary career with Nine and Seven networks.

Seven dropped him ahead of the 2022 cricket season, citing budgetary pressures.

Slater also made headlines in 2021 when criticising the government’s decision to impose a flight ban on all travellers from India in response to escalating Covid.

Last year, he was convicted of common assault, breaching a restraining order and two other offences against a woman.

He was sentenced to a two-year jail sentence to be served in the community.

Slater moved from Sydney to Noosa in November to address his issues with alcohol addiction, and to pursue a career as a mental health counsellor.
