Australian man, 48, tragically dies on the Kokoda Track in Papua New Guinea after desperate efforts to revive him

An Australian has died while hiking the historic Kokoda Track in Papua New Guinea.

The 48-year-old reportedly fainted while walking and his companions immediately performed CPR. 

He was then rushed to Pacific International Hospital in the capital Port Moresby where doctors declared him deceased. 

Local police are investigating. 

The Kokoda Track Authority, which manages the site, told the ABC it had been contacted by Adventure Kokoda about the incident.

April is one of busiest periods for visitors on the trail – which winds 96km through dense jungle – as it includes the lead-up to Anzac Day.

While it’s considered one of the world’s toughest hikes, thousands take on the challenge each year retracing the steps of Australian soldiers as they fought the Japanese in World War II .
