A beachgoer has bucked the CoolCabana craze after she said the popular open-tent shelter did not protect her family from the sun.

Jodie Thring took to social media this week with a photo of her $200 blue and white striped cabana after she joked it did not provide ‘any shade’.

It comes after the CoolCabana brand has been flying off shelves, with holidaymakers purchasing it in droves in various colours and designs.

But the Gold Coast mum posted a picture of the tall beach shelter on social media which showed the sun streaming in from the side.

The photo revealed her belongings underneath the product in what appears to be a late afternoon shot.

‘Baffled as to why anyone would spend $190-$200 on a ‘cool’ cabana that doesn’t actually provide any shade,’ she joked.

‘Soooo cool or should I say … so hot right now,’ Ms Thring added.

One online commenter agreed with the mum saying the blue carts were an eyesore.

‘Those beach carts make me laugh!,’ she said. ‘Watching all the tourists drag them over the sand.’

But others defended the hot item touting about how easy they are to put up and down.

‘Love ours. [We] won’t go down to beach without it,’ one commenter said, while another said it does protect from the sun but it depends what time of day it is.

Some beachgoers have said the cabanas were a silly idea and ruined the aesthetic of Australian beaches

The new sun safety product has been sweeping beaches across Australia, with beachgoers embracing the product, especially in the Gold Coast and Perth.

But some have said the cabanas were a silly idea and ruined the aesthetic of Australian beaches.

‘They suck. My home beach looks like a tent city. I wish they’d all go home,’ one complained.

‘I think they’re dumb, better off with something with sides,’ said another, while one more wrote: ‘So annoying when the whole beach is full of them though, they take up so much space.’

The CoolCabana brand comes with sand pockets that hold the legs of the shade down so it is secure on windy days.

Buyers can get accessories with it and can purchase a medium-sized tent for $189 and $249 for a larger one.

But shoppers also took to the smaller and cheaper Kmart brand cabana, which was described as the ‘perfect copy’ of the original – retailing at just $55.

Health advocates have also given the cabanas a thumbs up as they protect beachgoers from the harmful effects of the sun.

In Australia melanoma is the most common cancer for people aged 20 to 39, with one Australian dying from it every six hours.
