Teenager dies after being pulled from river in Leicestershire with three other boys rescued from water

A boy has died after being pulled out of a river in Barrow-upon-Soar, in Leicestershire.

Police pronounced the teenager dead at the scene after rescuing three other boys from the River Soar in the village near Loughborough.

The four boys were pulled out of the water following a helicopter-assisted search of the Barrow-upon-Soar area yesterday evening.

Witnesses reported seeing a large police presence in the village last night, as roads surrounding the river were shut off to the public.

A section of footpath near the River Soar remains cordoned off today and there continues to be a police presence in the area.

The news comes after officers shut a number of roads at 9.40pm on Saturday night and urged the public to stay away from the area.

Three roads surrounding the river – Bridge Street, Barrow Road and Flesh Hovel Lane – were closed as officers searched the area.

Eyewitnesses reported seeing a helicopter with a search light assisting an operation on the ground.

‘A police helicopter is currently over Barrow-upon-Soar,’ one eyewitness told LeicestershireLive last night.

‘There are loads of officers in the area. The spotlight is on and appears to be searching.’

Today, police remain in the area with a section of footpath near Barrow Road cordoned off. However roads are now reopened to traffic.

Leicestershire Police were approached for comment.
