A children’s TV show has sparked outrage after it introduced a non-binary robot character, who said being neither male or female is a ‘wonderful experience.’

The show Transformers: EarthSpark is based on Hasbro’s beloved robot toys – and is wildly popular among kids from the ages of two to 11. But its inclusion of a gender neutral storyline has raised concerns among some parents.

In the controversial clip, the robot named Nightshade said: ‘My pronouns are they/them,’ at which point one of the humans, named Sam, responded: ‘Thanks. I’m she/they…I’m sorry for how I reacted.

‘It’s just sometimes the world can be a scary place. It’s hard to know who’s dangerous or not.’

Sam then tries to comfort Nightshade by saying: ‘I know I’m safe when I’m with my friends or other non-binary people.’

The robot asks: ‘Non-binary?’ And the human replies: ‘People who aren’t female or male. Ah I’m sorry, I shouldn’t have assumed.’

Sounding pleased, the robot then responds: ‘I always knew my pronouns felt right, but what a wonderful word for a wonderful experience.’

Despite the episode airing some months ago, a clip has circulated on social media, riling up people who claim the conversation is too controversial for young children to watch.

Among the adversaries was Megyn Kelly, who reposted the clip with the comment: ‘This is DISGUSTING.’

Another Twitter user said: ‘OH, so people who are ‘non-binary,’ by default, are safe and trustworthy. THAT is the message here. Got that kids?

‘Stranger Danger, UNLESS the person identifies as non-binary and tells you their pronouns. THEN and only then are they a good person and TOTALLY trustworthy.’

But others disagreed, and said that the clip was allowing kids to be open to different perspectives: ‘I see nothing wrong… it’s okay to be different… peace.’

Another said: ‘I disagree, I don’t think it’s disgusting. There wasn’t anything nasty about that.

‘However, I do think it’s dumb to inject wokeness into a child’s show. Transformers has always been the battle between good and evil.

‘There’s no need for the woke. They need to leave kids alone.’

But some said the messaging is correct for young kid: ‘What’s the issue? Great message for kids about inclusion and acceptance.’

Others simply saw the lightheartedness of the situation, and joked: ‘They really putting the trans in transformers.’

The show is a reboot, and the first season, with 18 episodes, landed on Paramount+ in November 2022.
