A luxury shopping centre in Melbourne was plunged into lockdown over reports of an armed man walking around inside.

A knifeman was reportedly roaming through Emporium on Lonsdale Street at about 11.30am on Thursday.

Shoppers were pulled into the stores with staff closing the shutters and barricading the entrances.

Victoria Police said the knifeman had been apprehended and taken to hospital for observation

One customer said they heard yelling and saw police walking throughout the centre. 

‘Next thing they call a lockdown and we have to run into a store,’ she wrote on Twitter.
