Happy National Sickie Day! Why the first Monday of February typically sees the highest number of Brits call in sick – with 1.6million expected to do so tomorrow

If you’re  thinking of calling in sick tomorrow you had better have a good excuse ready, because 1.6 million other workers are also planning to do the same.

Tomorrow is National Sickie Day, the first Monday in February and the day of the year when British employees are statistically most likely to call in claiming to be under the weather.

One possible reason is that it comes after many workers’ first pay day since Christmas, meaning that a hangover is the most likely ailment.

About 150 million days are lost to sickies every year, costing the economy some £80 billion.

A study by betting firm Paddy Power has named Cardiff as Britain’s most sickie-prone city, followed by Sheffield, Bristol and London.
