Furious tenant, 58, smashed Volkswagen he found left in his parking space by a neighbour’s boyfriend in fit of rage… despite not using the bay himself for 12 years

  • Gavin Glover, 58, was angered when he found a car in his allocated space
  • He used a hammer to smash the windscreen and windows of the VW Polo
  • He admitted he does not own a car or use the space but said it was ‘impolite’

A tenant smashed up a car he found left in his parking space, despite not using the bay himself for 12 years.

Gavin Glover, 58, has neither a car nor a driving licence, but descended into a fit of ‘parking lot rage’ when the Volkswagen Polo was parked in a space allocated to him as part of his lease on a flat.

During the outburst, Glover stormed out of his property in Crewe and used a hammer to smash the windscreen, rear window and rear passenger window of the VW belonging to a neighbour’s boyfriend.

He was arrested later. When asked about the motivation, Glover, from Crewe, Cheshire, said: ‘She already has her own space adjacent to mine. I do not have my own car – nevertheless, I see this as being impolite.’

At Crewe Magistrates’ Court, he was ordered to pay the owner of the car, Luke Davies, £300 compensation after admitting criminal damage.

He now faces eviction from his flat.

Glover said he was ‘deeply remorseful and ashamed’ by what he had done.

The incident occurred on December 18 when Mr Davies visiting his partner and parked in the bay.

Leanne Gallagher, prosecuting, said: ‘The defendant became frustrated at this and, having had a large amount to drink, he took a hammer and smashed three windows of the car, a Volkswagen Polo, causing extensive damage.

‘The value is not known but the three windows will need to be replaced.

‘In terms of the police interview, he said there are ongoing issues in relation to the allocated parking bay.

‘He said it was a bit of a blur, but he had gone out with an object and was not aware of how much damage he had caused.’

Representing himself, Glover said: ‘Firstly I would like to apologise to the owner of the car.

‘It was not directed at him personally. It was a kind of a petty thing that has escalated into something more serious as a result of the actions of myself for which I am thoroughly ashamed.

‘I do believe it could have all been avoided. I did ask the girlfriend of the gentleman who owns the car who lives in my block of flats. I asked her several times not to let her friends and visitors park in the bay. It has been going on for quite a few years.

‘But whenever I mentioned it politely, there were sniggers and jeers and unpleasant remarks.’

He added: ‘It sounds so petty what has led to what I have done but it’s very serious and I understand that completely as they could lead to me being evicted.

‘I have been in my flat for 12 years now and I like it, I love it, but they came around to see me on Tuesday this week. They have explained the severity of it and I am aware of it. I could be evicted over this.

‘I am concerned about my actions. I am not denying the severity of what I have done and how it looks. It was a scary thing and it’s not in my personality.’

Along with the fine, Glover was conditionally discharged for 12 months.
