Boy, 16, is arrested on suspicion of murder after girl, 14, died in fire in East London flats
A 14-year-old girl was the victim of a fatal fire at a block of flats in east London and a 16-year-old boy was arrested on suspicion of murder, the Metropolitan Police has said.
The victim of the fire in Beckton, East London, yesterday has been named locally as ‘Tiffany’ with tributes the school girl on social media.
The Met said officers were called to the blaze on Tollgate Road shortly after 5pm along with the London Ambulance Service (LAS) and London Fire Brigade (LFB).
One person died at the scene as paramedics treated five others who were taken to hospital, the London Ambulance Service confirmed.
Some reports said a number of residents were forced to jump out of windows to escape the deadly inferno.
A total of six fire engines arrived with 40 firefighters earlier in the evening as they tried to extinguish the flames, which fire services said had taken hold of the first and second floors of the flats.
Social media has been filled with posts of condolences following the tragic news.
One comment reads: ‘Tiffany was a beautiful person inside and out. She was funny and loving.’
Another adds: ‘Oh no. She was so beautiful. RIP.’
