Racegoers were photographed holding onto their extravagant hats as they attended the Derby Day in Epsom today amid some blustery weather.

The two-day horse racing event, which started yesterday, attracted numerous lavishly-dressed attendees.

And like yesterday, which was Ladies Day, the weather was less than ideal, with temperatures in Epsom hitting a cool 15C, and some clouds in the sky.

However, this did not deter keen racegoers, who appeared determined to hang onto their statement headgear in the breeze.

Epsom organisers describe the derby as the ‘world’s greatest flat race’, and says viewers should ‘expect ups, downs and history in the making’ at the event.

According to event organisers, the Derby is a ‘spectacular, gleeful, celebratory day where people come together to join in racing’s most unforgettable carnival’.

Its website says: ‘The crown jewel of all races, The Betfred Derby. The one that sired them all the others. This is the birthplace of thoroughbred sprinting, one chance for horses to make history. It’s not one to miss.’

And attendees made sure they were dressed to impress, with floral frocks and statement hats the order of the day.

As well as prints, block colours were popular among lots of guests, with many wearing entire ensembles based around a single hue.

And it isn’t just the fashion some people will be keeping an eye out for at the races – some are likely to indulge in a bit of celeb spotting.

Among the famous faces at today’s event was Priti Patel, who donned a blue floral midi dress with a pair of sensible, flat loafers.

Another recognisable face was Dame Mary Berry, who posed for snappers alongside her granddaughter Abby Hunnings.
