Josephine Chaplin Obituary

On Thursday, it was announced by her family that Josephine Chaplin, the daughter of the famous actor Charlie Chaplin, passed away on July 13 at the age of 74. The cause of her death was not disclosed right away.

Variety shared a post on Twitter:

As a young child, Josephine Chaplin appeared in movies alongside her famous father, actor Charlie Chaplin. She had roles in films like “Limelight” (1952) and “A Countess From Hong Kong” (1967) when she was a toddler.

As she grew older, Josephine starred in several other movies, including “L’odeur des Fauves” (1972) with Maurice Ronet, “Escape to the Sun” (1972) with Laurence Harvey, and “The Canterbury Tales” (1972) directed by Pier Paolo Pasolini.

In later years, she acted in “The Bay Boy” (1984) with Liv Ullman and Kiefer Sutherland, and portrayed Hadley Richardson in the 1998 miniseries “Hemingway” alongside Stacy Keach as Ernest Hemingway.

Besides her acting career, Josephine managed the Chaplin office in Paris for a long time and helped create a statue of her father as the Little Tramp in Ireland. She was the third child of Charlie Chaplin and Oona O’Neill, born on March 28, 1949, in Santa Monica.

Josephine was married to Nikki Sistovaris, a Greek businessman, in 1969, but they divorced in 1977. She then lived with actor Maurice Ronet until his death in 1983. Later, she married archaeologist Jean-Claude Gardin in 1989, and they remained together until his passing in 2013.

She is survived by her sons Charly Sistovaris, Julien Ronet, and Arthur Gardin, as well as her siblings Geraldine and Michael. Josephine is also survived by her sisters Victoria, Jane, and Annette, and brothers Eugene and Christopher.
