At the end of 2022, McDonald’s Australia dropped Sprite as its zero-sugar alternative, which drew similar backlash and confusion as to why it couldn’t be an addition to the menu instead of a straight swap.

KFC’s decision to move to Sunkist Zero Sugar was revealed on Wednesday and met with a chorus of dismay by the Australian public.

Apple juice had also been scrapped from the drinks menu, and sparkling water had been added in its place.

‘There are rumours they aim to replace all the drinks with zero sugar versions. But if you’re at KFC, why would want zero sugar?’ Russ eats said.

‘It’s absolutely beyond me. Unless you’re diabetic, then I understand.’

KFC confirmed the controversial switch and said they always look for ways to innovate their menu.

Aussies were far from thrilled with the change and took to social media to vent their frustration.

‘Aghh why can’t they just have both Sunkist and zero sugar Sunkist,’ one person wrote.

‘Zero sugar to, of course, balance out the order,’ another said.

‘The Sunkist news is a DAGGER to the heart,’ a third commented.

‘What a disgrace,’ another said.

‘Good to have sugar-free options but let’s not go overboard,’ a fourth added.
