A 55-year-old man has been killed after being hit by a van outside a pub Northumberland.

Two men aged 32 and 37 and a woman aged 27 have been arrested on suspicion of murder and remain in police custody.

The incident happened at around 10pm last night outside The Bay Horse Inn, in Cramlington. Police say the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

A second 55-year-old man sustained serious injuries and remains in critical condition. 

Police are appealing for witnesses and anyone who might information, as they launch an investigation.

Describing the area as ‘very quiet’, one resident told Chronicle Live of his shock at the incident.

Aiden Simpson, 45, and Nicola Curryer, live next to the pub and heard a ‘commotion’ as emergency services arrived at the scene. 

He said he had been watching the boxing and heard lots of voices, but did not see what happened.

‘When you see a tent up like that you know something bad has happened. It’s not nice to see, especially being next door,’ Mr Simpson added.

‘There’s never anything like that round here, that’s why it’s a shock.’

In a statement, Northumbria Police said they had received reports of two men being struck by a vehicle. 

The statement said specialist officers are supporting the families of both the man who died and the man currently in hospital. 

A vehicle was recovered a 10 minute drive away from where the men were struck.

Detective Superintendent Jane Fairlamb, the Senior Investigating Officer said: ‘This is a tragic incident in which a man has lost his life and another has been hospitalised with serious injuries.

‘Our thoughts are with their families at this difficult time and we’d ask their privacy is respected.’

DSI Fairlamb added: ‘Our investigation remains ongoing and there will be additional officers deployed across the Cramlington and Blyth areas today, while we carry out further enquiries and speak with witnesses.
