Man in his 20s is in critical condition after shooting in Rotherham: Officers arrest man, 21, on suspicion of attempted murder

A man is currently in critical condition following a shooting in Rotherham as officers arrest a man on suspicion of attempted murder. 

On Saturday at 2.33pm South Yorkshire Police were called to Winifred Street, in Rotherham, South Yorkshire, following reports of a shooting.

Upon arrival, officers found a man in his twenties with wounds to his back and leg.

They discovered that a firearm was used. 

Yorkshire Ambulance Service and the Yorkshire Air Ambulance attended the scene and the victim was taken to hospital by land ambulance, where he remains in critical condition.

A number of police cars were seen guarding the area throughout yesterday evening.

South Yorkshire Police have launched an attempted murder investigation – so far one person has been arrested in connection with the incident.

Investigating Officer Detective Sergeant Janine Broughton said: ‘We are aware that an incident of this nature will be concerning to our communities and local residents within the area.

‘We have an increased police presence in the area while officers conduct their enquiries and I urge you to speak to the them if you have any concerns. They are there to help you.

He added: ‘Our investigation is in its early stages, we have already made one arrest, a 21-year-old man on suspicion of attempted murder and I offer my reassurance that officers and detectives are working hard to find those responsible.

‘We are keen to hear from anyone who was in the area at the time, may have dash-cam footage or any information that may be able to help with our enquiries.’

Detectives investigating the shooting are also appealing for witnesses and those with information to come forward and assist with their enquiries.
