A man has been arrested on suspicion of murder and concealing a birth after a baby was found dead at a terraced home in Camden, as the infant’s mother remains in hospital.

The horrific discovery was made when officers were called to a property on Taviton Street in central London after a woman who had just given birth turned up at hospital on Monday afternoon.

A man was then arrested later that day on suspicion of murder, child neglect, and concealment of a birth and remains in custody this afternoon.

The baby’s mother is in a stable condition and inquiries into the circumstances of the tragic death are ongoing. The child’s age is not yet known.

Officers remain outside the house where the infant was found dead and a blue police tent has been erected on the pavement on Taviton Street, where homes cost up to £3 million.

Police were initially alerted to the incident in the affluent area of the capital shortly after 2pm yesterday.

Staff from the London Ambulance Service also attended the scene, with the child’s mother now receiving care in hospital.

A bin was also covered up behind the red and white tape, with a police battering ram visible from the road.

Taviton Street has been home to the University College London’s School of Slavonic and East European Studies since 2005 and is situated in an affluent area of the capital – with one two-bedroom flat priced at £6,500 per month according to Rightmove.

It also features student halls, including Campbell House, located just a few doors down from the house involved in the incident.

Famous British World War Two resistance agent Noor Inayat Khan also lived on the expensive street, which now boasts a row of several-storey Georgian townhouses.

Ms Khan spied on Nazi figures under the codename Madeleine and was the first female wireless operator to be sent to help with the French resistance.

Locals have expressed their horror at the incident, with one woman, who did not want to be named, remarking: ‘It’s the most awful thing.

‘I just can’t believe it. It really upsets me to even think about.’

Meanwhile, a student who frequents one of the university buildings and also wished to remain anonymous, added: ‘I’m really shocked as I’ve never heard of anything like that happen around here.

‘I only really see students out and about.’

Police remain on the scene.

A Met Police statement confirmed an investigation had been launched.

Detective Chief Inspector Sarb Kaur, leading the investigation, said: ‘This is a very complex and sensitive case.

‘At this early stage, we continue to work alongside the NHS to ensure the mother of the baby receives the necessary care in hospital.

‘My detectives from Central North Public Protection team are working on a range of enquires and we await the results of forensic examination before we can establish the full facts of the investigation.’
