A man has been shot and killed by police after allegedly stabbing an officer in the back.

Just before 8am on Friday, two constables were called to a home on Bishopsgate St in Wickham, about 3km from Newcastle, after reports of theft.

The two officers were then allegedly threatened by a man with a knife on arrival.

The man allegedly stabbed one constable in the back and the second constable suffered injuries to her hands.

The man was shot and died at the scene. He is yet to be formally identified.

The two officers were taken to the John Hunter Hospital in serious but stable conditions.

On Friday morning, a NSW Police spokesperson said: ‘There was a confrontation whereby the man allegedly produced a knife, a male police officer was stabbed in the upper back near the armpit region. 

‘A female constable was also had lacerations to her hand.

‘During the confrontation the man was shot by police, despite their best efforts that man died en route to hospital.’

They said the circumstance surrounding the incident will be subject to a review while the officers involved recover.

‘Subsequently a critical incident investigation is now under way. The state crime commands homicide squad is leading that,’ they said.

‘The two police officers were taken by ambulance to John Hunter Hospital and are still at the hospital now, undergoing treatment. The prognosis for both officers, thankfully, is good.

‘I have seen both of them in the hospital, they were sitting up and talking, obviously very distressing. 

‘This will be an ongoing investigation now about the circumstances of the whole incident. They will be reportable to the coroner.’
