• Northern England and Wales face a blast of up to 8 inches of snow on Thursday

Britain will be hit by heavy snow later this week as the Met Office issued a severe weather warning for up to eight inches to fall in some areas on Thursday.

Meteorologists said a band of rain, sleet and snow will push north from Thursday morning, bringing up to 0.8in (2cm) snow at lower levels. Up to 2in (5cm) is set to fall on ground above 650ft (200m), and as much as 8in (20cm) above 1,300ft (400m).

The 24-hour warning area covers a distance of more than 250 miles from Berwick-upon-Tweet in North East England across to Cardigan in Ceredigion, West Wales.

It will run from 3am Thursday until 3am Friday, but the Met Office said there was uncertainty over the ‘rain and snow boundary, and the northern limit of the snow’.

Exact details could change in the coming days. The snow will ease later on Thursday, and may turn back to rain or drizzle, especially in the south and east of the area.

Forecasters said there was of a chance of power cuts and mobile phone coverage outages during the day, while ‘some rural communities could become cut off’.

The Met Office added that there could be travel delays on roads with ‘some stranded vehicles and passengers, along with delayed or cancelled rail and air travel’.
