Single picture exposes one obvious problem with Aussies’ growing love affair with massive American utes

  • Massive ‘Yank tank’ ute slammed for ‘blocking traffic’
  • Chevrolet Silverado was parked over boundary line
  • Motorists want the popular vehicle type off the streets

A photo of a massive American pick-up truck in a car parking space with its back end jutting out into oncoming traffic has been slammed online.

An onlooker posted images of a six-metre long parked Chevrolet Silverado ute protruding out on to the street, blocking traffic and creating a dangerous hazard in Melbourne‘s Bayside.

It comes as the soaring popularity of the over-sized ‘Yank tanks’ has sparked calls for the huge vehicles to be banned across Australia.

Pictures of the white dual-cab vehicle showed it parked on a 45-degree angle among a row of cars, its tray sticking out behind the white painted boundary line on the road.

Another image revealed the massive truck was blocking traffic, with a Kia driver veering around the back of it to get past.

Length of American pick-up trucks

CHEVROLET SILVERADO: 5.931 metres

DODGE RAM: 5.833 metres

FORD F-150:  5.885 metres

The images were captioned: ‘Yank tank blocking traffic, Things that go ding.’

Commenters took aim at the parked vehicle while others described their own run-ins with the ‘city-slicker utes’.

‘Don’t often see this angle. Usually only see the front of them – taking up your entire rear view mirror,’ one joked.

‘She blinds everybody with her super high beams, she’s a squirrel crushing, deer smacking, driving machine!’ said another.

‘Clearly illegally parked. Where are the police?’ a third asked.

‘Send the photo to the local council via their ‘report it’ page?’ a fourth wrote.

The pick-up style trucks have become increasingly popular in Australia.

Sales of the RAM 1500 brand ute have skyrocketed across Australia in just five years with over 4,000 sold in 2021 – compared with just 292 in 2016, the Canberra Times reported.

With a length of 5.885 metres, the bestselling vehicle on American roads would be one of the biggest cars in Australia during an era of high petrol prices.

Only the Chevrolet Silverado, at 5.931 metres, is longer while the F-150 is a little bigger than the Dodge RAM at 5.833 metres.

Other popular models sold in Australia include the Toyota Tundra and Nissan Titan, but these are privately imported.

The newest Chevrolet Silverado model can sell from $110,000 up to a whopping $163,000.

But Aussie owners of the massive ‘American’ utes have been vilified for taking up multiple car park spots.

Several outraged motorists have called out ‘pavement princess’ utility truck owners for using their oversized utes to clog roads that ‘aren’t designed’ for them.

There are also fears the ageing infrastructure of multi-level car parks could be at risk of collapsing under the influx of the heavy American vehicles and EVs.

General Motors which manufactures the Chevrolet Silverado was contacted by Daily Mail Australia for comment.
