One of McDonald’s most-loved menu staples is about to be given a makeover.
Ice cream sundaes will soon to be served in fibre-based cups as part of the fast food chain’s bold move to phase out all single-use plastic from its restaurants across Australia by 2025.
The clear plastic cups hot chocolate fudge, strawberry and caramel sundaes currently come in will begin to be phased out in August.
McDonald’s has began warning sundae lovers of the change through online ads which have popped up on social media.

‘Did you know, since 2018 we’ve been working towards all customer packaging being made from renewable or reclaimed materials,’ the ad reads.
‘We are committed to continuing to reduce the amount of plastic across our business and have a positive impact on the communities and people we serve.’
The new sundae packaging is expected to remove 178 metric tonnes of plastic from circulation per year.
The new containers are made from at least 81 per cent fibre-based materials but still contain a small amount of plastic to ‘ensure food safety and quality’, according to a McDonald’s spokeswoman.
McDonald’s recently redesigned its McFlurry cups to remove the plastic lids entirely replaced its salad bowls and sundae cups with fibre-based alternatives.
The fast food chain has also phased out plastic cutlery and drinking straws in recent years following a government national plastics summit in 2020.
