Thief drives off with a two-year-old boy asleep in the back of his car – after dad pulled over and ducked into the shops

A desperate manhunt continues for an alleged car thief who stole a car and sped off while a toddler was sleeping in the backseat.

A man briefly ducked into a supermarket on the Nepean Hwy in Chelsea in Melbourne 4pm on Sunday.

The dad left the engine of his grey Volkswagen SUV running as his two-year-old son slept.

A thief jumped in and drove off with the little boy inside the car.

He left the uninjured child on nearby Bath St and fled the scene.
