Furious Australians have accused the group who left one of Sydney‘s most popular beaches a rubbish pit as being the same people who spruik environmental awareness.

Bronte Beach in the city’s ritzy eastern suburbs was left unrecognisable on Christmas, with backpackers blamed for leaving behind a horrifying mess.

Locals heading down for a swim on Boxing Day were met with discarded plastic cups, bottles, food, abandoned clothes, shoes, towels, blankets, and even drug paraphernalia.

While the eyesore angered those living in Bronte and surrounding suburbs, as well as Waverley Council Mayor Paula Masselos, many have claimed there is a ‘double standard’ for those responsible.

‘I thought this was the generation of caring for the planet, hypocrites,’ one said.

‘This is the generation going green and the same generation being hoodwinked by #climatescam,’ said another.

‘Gotta love those who virtue signal on ‘acknowledging the traditional owners of the land’ yet leave the land a garbage dump at Bronte Beach on Christmas Day,’ a third commented.

‘I bet they would be climate activists worried about the environment but not about the litter,’ another added.

‘This is how much Greta’s climate warriors care about the planet … The youth are *dedicated* to cleaning up the world – so long as they can force some poor slave to do it for them,’ another comment read.

‘Virtue signalling greenie Millennials and Gen Z walking their talk,’ one wrote.

Amidst the slew of rubbish left behind were piles of empty nitrous oxide gas cylinders, colloquially called ‘nangs’.

The gas canisters – normally used in whipped cream dispensers – can give a quick intense high when inhaled.

Elsewhere beer, water and soft drink bottles were left lying along with ditched food and drink packaging and items of clothing, including pairs of high end trainers and sunglasses.

Boxer shorts, t-shirts, backpacks, balls, chip bags, and carrier bags were also spread throughout the park in an ugly vista that stretched towards the horizon.

Ms Masselos slammed the ‘anti-social’ louts.

‘It is extremely disappointing to see how much rubbish was left behind by people who have no respect for Waverley’s beautiful parks and beaches and for not obeying our alcohol ban,’ she told Daily Mail Australia.

‘The beach is there for all to share and anti-social behaviour such as this is not welcome.

‘I’d like to thank our outdoor staff, Lifeguards, local volunteers and residents who worked until 11pm last night and back again at 5am this morning to clear the mess and to have Bronte Park looking beautiful.

‘It’s also a good time to remind everyone to share safely over the holiday period, no alcohol on the beaches and parks, and always check the beach safety advice.’

Ms Masselos said she was considering bringing in restrictions to stop any repeats of Christmas Day’s mess, such as limiting the number of people allowed to gather in groups.

‘I have several options I’m considering but I really want to discuss it with our staff, rangers and police to see what is possible,’ she said on Sky News’ First Edition.

‘There are a number of options… which would possibly look at extra police and extra rangers but all of this actually costs quite a bit of additional money so we need to think it through very carefully.’
