Dylan Mulvaney is a TikTok star, actress, and trans rights activist.

She was born on December 29, 1996, in San Diego, California

She is an outspoken advocate for transgender individuals after undergoing her own transition.

She has also used TikTok to detail her own self-growth as an inspiration to others.

While living with her parents during the Coronavirus pandemic, Mulvaney used the platform to continue discussions on gender.

‘I finally asked myself these questions about gender,’ Mulvaney told GirlBoss.

‘I had never asked myself those dark questions because when I was four, I tried coming out to my mom as a girl, but it just wasn’t a thing then. Being trans was very taboo.’

She continued: ‘I come from a very conservative part of California—and not even to my family’s fault, it just wasn’t really in the cards for me.

‘Then, during the pandemic, I was back at home living with my family and asking myself, “Dylan, do you feel like a boy?” It was really during that period of unemployment that I finally asked myself, “Who am I without this career?”’

Dylan attended the University of Cincinnati’s College-Conservatory of Music and graduated in 2019.

At that time, she identified as trans and found it difficult to break into the entertainment industry.

Dylan admitted to dislocating from her identity to some extent to make advancements in the industry.

She said: ‘I struggled for so long in having the entertainment industry accept me and have a place for me… now because the internet and all these followers have decided to love me, it’s creating these opportunities that I didn’t have before.’

Dylan has more than 10 million followers on TikTok and her videos have attracted praise from celebrities such as Lady Gaga and Paris Hilton. Dylan also has more than 1 million followers on Instagram.

When did Dylan Mulvaney come out as trans?

Even though Dylan transitioned during the Covid-19 pandemic and has been publicly trans for a few years, she was always aware of her identity, according to Indian Entertainment and lifestyle platform Pinkvilla.

She said in an interview that she grew up in a ‘very conservative family’ at her childhood home in San Diego.

When she told her mother aged four that she was a girl, the quick response was: ‘God does not make mistakes.’

Dylan was uncertain whether she had the opportunities or means to transition.

Laverne Cox from Orange is the New Black played a significant role in Dylan’s journey and helped her to understand her identity.

Befriending E.R. Fightmaster, a non-binary actor, also enhanced Dylan’s confidence.

‘That [during the pandemic] was the first moment since I was a child that I really got to ask myself like Dylan, like, “Who are you without acting and without playing a boy part?”’ Dylan said in an interview.

Dylan has chronicled her gender transition journey on TikTok, turning it into a series called Days of Girlhood Series. It started in March 2022.

Dylan said she had a difficult time seeing all these incredible trans women and wanted to become like them but did not know how to.

She decided to document her journey to help present and future trans people.

How has Dylan Mulvaney found fame?

Dylan had roles in several theatre and musical shows between 2015 and 2020, including The Book of Mormon.

The Days of Girlhood Series saw her TikTok following take off rapidly.

Dylan said of her rise to fame: ‘When the pandemic hit, I was doing the Broadway musical Book of Mormon. I found myself jobless and without the creative means to do what I loved. I downloaded TikTok, assuming it was a kids’ app. Once I came out as a woman, I made this “day one of being a girl” comedic video. And it blew up. I really don’t know another place online like TikTok that can make a creator grow at the rate that it does. Some of these other apps really celebrate perfection and over-editing and flawlessness. I think with TikTok specifically, people love the rawness. They love people just talking to the camera. I try to approach every video like a FaceTime with a friend.’

Mulvaney has also appeared on popular television shows, including 7th Heaven, The Ellen DeGeneres Show and The Price is Right.

What are some of Dylan Mulvaney’s most famous comments?

Mulvaney said in a clip that she felt uncomfortable in public when wearing tight clothes because people would stare at her crotch. She goes on to say that society should normalize ‘women having bulges’.

‘I can normalize women having bulges sometimes. We’re coming up on bikini season and you might see a bulge or two, so normalize the bulge!’ she said before bursting into song.

Mulvaney goes on to sing: ‘Normalize the bulge. We are normalizing the bulge. Women can have bulges, and that’s ok. We’re not gonna stare at their crotches.’

In a video in October 2022, Mulvaney took aim at Caitlin Jenner’s political platform. She said: ‘You’ve been accepted by a group of people that very clearly does not accept me, and nearly every day this week, I have been called a freak, a child predator, an absurdity.

‘I am none of those things that your cohorts are painting me to be, and my question for you is: don’t you feel a little lonely over there? These people that you’re standing with, I don’t know if they have your best intentions at heart. But they will use you to make mine and the trans community’s life a lot harder than it already is.’

Dylan met President Joe Biden in October 2022 in the Oval Office to discuss her transition and transgender issues in the US.

Topics of discussion included anti-trans legislation being passed by states and how gender-affirming healthcare was being banned.

She said in a video posted in October: ‘I’m ready to step up and show trans people we’re not going anywhere and that trans kids they deserve a fighting chance to be their true selves.’

Mulvaney said the interaction with Biden was productive.

‘I left with a lot of hope and optimism, not only for just trans people, but many different topics,’ she said.

At one point in the interview, Biden was asked by Mulvaney if states should have the right to ‘ban gender-affirming healthcare’.

‘I don’t think any state or anybody should have the right to do that—as a moral question and as a legal question. I just think it’s wrong,’ Biden said.
