Pro-gun GOP Gov. Chris Sununu finds unlikely ally in Whoopi Goldberg as she defends him against The View audience boos

  • Sununu, the Republican Gov. of New Hampshire, is eyeing a presidential run
  • He told The View audience he would not ban ‘any guns’ which triggered jeers

Republican New Hampshire Gov. Chris Sununu found an unlikely ally in Whoopi Goldberg today while being booed by The View audience for refusing to ban AR-15s.

Sununu – who is eyeing a presidential run – was being grilled by the predominantly liberal panel of hosts when the conversation turned to AR-15s.

Asked why he wouldn’t ban them in his state or federally, he said: ‘[Gun violence is] not because people have access to guns. It’s because we’re not dealing with mental health.

‘We don’t provide access to mental health for kids… I’m not banning any guns!’

To Whoopi’s disgust, the audience began to jeer.

‘No! No, no, no, no. No. No booing,’ she fumed. Joy Behar joined in the rebuke.

‘Nobody Republican will ever come back here if you’re going to boo,’ she quipped.

Whoopi, still outraged, continued: ‘We need to talk to people to find out what they’re thinking and are they thinking in the right way.

‘He’s not going to be perfect, none of them are. But at least give people the opportunity to explain what’s going on.

‘We’ll be right back.’

Sununu had defended his state – ‘the safest in the country’ – where there are relatively few gun ownership restrictions.

He pointed to Chicago, which has the tightest gun ownership laws but also some of the worst gun violence.

‘When people are in crisis, they have nowhere to turn. They resort to violence. We don’t do the right things in terms of locking down our schools and protecting.

‘No, I’m not banning any guns. I’m gonna provide access to mental health. We’re gonna get at the core of the issue,’ he said.

He also advocated against schools deciding which reading material is suitable for children, and vowed to keep power in the hands of local officials – as a governor and potentially as a president.

He railed against Donald Trump – ‘the guy is playing the victim card’ – and accused Ron DeSantis of only focusing on culture wars in his campaign as opposed to talking about inflation, mental health or opioids.
