The long-gestating Heat sequel continues to be shrouded in mystery.

Now director Michael Mann has assured fans that Heat 2 is indeed in active development.

In a recent interview with the Los Angeles Times, Mann shed some light on the development status of Heat 2

He revealed that he is currently writing a screenplay adaptation of the novel he co-wrote with Reed Farrel Coleman in 2022.

Mann also provided an update on the film’s production timeline, stating that he plans to start shooting by the end of 2024 or early 2025.

When asked about the reports of Adam Driver and Austin Butler leading the sequel, the filmmaker remained tight-lipped and simply said, “I can’t talk about that.”

The original Heat film starred Al Pacino and Robert De Niro in the lead roles. The 1995 film centred on the conflict between a detective (Pacino) and a thief (De Niro).

Heat 2 will serve as both a prequel and a sequel to Heat and is based on the novel of the same name.

The book alternates between two time periods: one follows Chris Shiherlis as he tries to evade the LAPD and Detective Vincent Hanna after the failed bank robbery, and the other is set in Chicago in 1988.

Adam Driver and Austin Butler are said to be taking over the roles originally played by De Niro and Kilmer. However, there has been no official confirmation regarding their casting at this point.

Heat 2‘s release date has not been announced yet.
