Sébastien Haller (28) has been waiting for this one moment for so long. The Borussia Dortmund striker was diagnosed with testicular cancer last summer. In the period that followed, the 28-year-old had to have two operations and then undergo chemotherapy. In the meantime, however, the French soccer player is really fit again – and has finally been able to score his first goal in the German Bundesliga.
In the 5-1 win against SC Freiburg on Saturday, Sébastien scored his first competitive goal for BVB – and that on World Cancer Day. After a cross from Guerreiro, the striker, who was in the starting XI for the second time after recovering from a tumor, successfully converted the ball to the sixth-placed goalkeeper. “I’ve been waiting for this since day one,” he said afterward dpa. There is nothing better for a striker than to score: “It gives me a boost.”
In the training camp three weeks ago, Sébastien was able to show that he is on the way back to his old top form. In the friendly against Swiss club FC Basel, the striker converted a penalty before giving two more goals to Borussia Dortmund – all in less than eight minutes.
