Her father, an attorney, relocated the family to Fayetteville before April 1940, where he established a law practice and later served as a superior court judge. MacRae completed her primary education in Fayetteville and finished her secondary education at Holton-Arms, an independent college-preparatory school for girls in Washington, D.C.

Inspired by director Otto Preminger during an unsuccessful audition for a part in his film “Saint Joan,” MacRae moved to New York City in October 1956 to pursue professional performance training.

Under the guidance of Uta Hagen at the Herbert Berghof Studio, MacRae honed her skills in off-Broadway and summer-stock productions over two years. She also engaged in artistic training, taking classes in drawing and painting at the Art Students League in Manhattan.

Elizabeth MacRae, a veteran actress best known for her roles in the soap operas General Hospital and Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C., has passed away at the age of 88. MacRae died peacefully on Monday, May 27, in her hometown of Fayetteville, North Carolina.

MacRae had a prolific acting career spanning over 25 years, with appearances in numerous television shows such as Route 66, The Fugitive, Gunsmoke, Bonanza, and I Dream of Jeannie. She was perhaps most recognized for her recurring role as Lou-Ann Poovie, the girlfriend of the title character, on the sitcom Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C. from 1966 to 1969.

On the soap opera General Hospital, MacRae played the role of Meg Baldwin, taking over the part from actress Patricia Breslin. She first appeared as Meg in 1969 and continued in the role until 1970, before returning for a second stint from 1972 to 1973, when the character was ultimately killed off. MacRae also had roles in other daytime dramas, including Another World, Days of Our Lives, Guiding Light, and Search for Tomorrow.

In addition to her extensive television work, MacRae appeared in several films, most notably playing the role of Meredith in the 1974 Francis Ford Coppola thriller The Conversation. Her final acting credit was in 2011, when she voiced various characters in the anime series Supernatural: The Animation.

After retiring from acting in 1989, MacRae focused her efforts on working as a drug and alcohol counselor with the Freedom Institute in New York City. She and her husband, Charles Day Halsey Jr., who passed away earlier this year at the age of 96, eventually relocated back to North Carolina. MacRae was inducted into the Fayetteville Performing Arts Hall of Fame in March 2023.

MacRae’s nephew, Jim MacRae, described her as “bright and articulate” and said that she had “a wonderful life” despite the challenges of her later years. The actress is survived by her five stepchildren, Terry Halsey, Peter Halsey, Hugh Halsey, Cate Halsey, and Alex Halsey Topper.

In 2001, they relocated to MacRae’s childhood neighborhood of Haymount in Fayetteville, North Carolina, where she would later pass away in 2024 at the age of 88.

While MacRae did not have any children of her own, she is survived by five stepchildren from her marriage to Charles Halsey – Terry Halsey, Peter Halsey, Hugh Halsey, Cate Halsey, and Alex Halsey Topper. She is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and nephews.
Throughout her acting career, MacRae was best known for her roles on television, including playing Gomer Pyle’s girlfriend Lou-Ann Poovie on the sitcom Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C. from 1966 to 1969, and Meg Baldwin on the soap opera General Hospital from 1969 to 1973. She also had guest appearances on dozens of other popular TV shows such as Gunsmoke, The Fugitive, Dr. Kildare, and Kojak.

In addition to her television work, MacRae appeared in several films, including The Incredible Mr. Limpet, Everything’s Ducky, and Francis Ford Coppola’s The Conversation. After retiring from acting in the late 1980s, she devoted much of her time to counseling individuals struggling with substance abuse issues.

MacRae was inducted into the Fayetteville Hall of Fame in 2023, honoring her contributions to the arts and her community. She passed away peacefully on May 27, 2024 in Fayetteville at the age of 88.
