Wiley worked for the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York in the Civil Division. In 2013, Wiley was talked about as a possible president of the NAACP, but Cornell William Brooks got the job instead.
She worked for the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, the American Civil Liberties Union, and the Open Society Institute before being named counsel to Mayor Bill de Blasio in 2014. Wiley was de Blasio’s lawyer for two and a half years. During that time, she came up with the phrase “agents of the city” to keep the public from finding out about de Blasio’s conversations with lobbyists.
She also started the Center for Social Inclusion and was its president. This is a national policy strategy group that works to end structural racism. Wiley was a political and legal analyst on MSNBC and taught at The New School.
Wiley ran for mayor of New York City in the Democratic primary in 2021. In June 2021, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a U.S. representative, and former presidential candidates Julian Castro and Elizabeth Warren all backed Wiley. She also had the support of the band The Strokes, whose song “Starting Again” was used in an ad for her campaign. On June 12, 2021, the band also held a charity concert at Irving Plaza. In the Democratic primary, Wiley came in third, after Eric Adams and Kathryn Garcia.
Wiley is The New School’s senior vice president for social justice and a professor at the Milano School of Policy, Management, and Environment. Wiley was named president and CEO of the Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights and its sister group, The Leadership Conference Education Fund, on May 2, 2022.
