Donnelly was set to manage the Mariners’ Triple-A club Tacoma Rainiers of the Pacific Coast League in 2014.

Nevertheless, before spring training on February 24, Stearns suffered hiatal hernia surgery, and his slower-than-expected recovery forced him to move down to a professional scouting position with the Mariners.

Before joining the Mariners organization in 2014, Donnelly managed the Brooklyn Cyclones of the New York-Penn League, a Short Season-A farm club of the New York Mets, for three seasons (2011-2013).
