Early Life of Steve Mackey

Mackey was born in Sheffield, South Yorkshire. He attended Hucklow First and Middle Schools with his childhood friend Richard Hawley.

They would later perform as Pulp members together. He received his primary education at Hinde House Comprehensive in Sheffield before continuing his education at Richmond College of Further Education.

He played bass for Trolley Dog Shag, a Sheffield band that appeared with Pulp on a Dolebusters compilation CD in 1987, before joining Pulp.

He moved to London in 1988 to pursue his interest in filmmaking, and in 1992 he received his MA in Film from the Royal College of Art.

After joining Pulp in 1989, he appeared on the Fire Records album Separations. Despite the band’s success in the 1990s, he continued to compose, record, and tour with them.

We Love Life, His ‘n Hers, Different Class, This Is Hardcore, and Intro – The Gift Recordings were later albums.

After an 8-year hiatus, Mackey returned to the music scene in 2010 with Pulp, followed by world tours in 2011 and 2012, and the release of their single “After You,” produced by LCD Soundsystem’s James Murphy.
