Rafael Nadal’s Monday of lament
Yeserday was a painful one for Rafael Nadal as he crashed out of the men’s singles 6-1, 6-4 in the second round to his old nemesis Novak Djokovic.
Today he can bat away some of the pain as he teams up with Carlos Alcaraz. What a partnership we’re being treated to there.
Here, Oliver Holt tells the story of a king in his kingdom one last time.

Safe passage through the water for Team GB’s Anna Hopkin as she scores the joint-tenth best time overall, coming fourth in her heat.
Hailing from Chorley, Lancashire, the mixed 4x100m medley relay gold medalist from Tokyo has high hopes.
Men’s 4x200m freestyle relay to come soon.
Team GB men get underway in the hockey
And we’re off against the Netherlands as Team GB’s men’s hockey squad look to extend their unvanquished start to Pool A.
They thrashed Spain 4-0 in the opening match but needed a late show against South Africa to recover a 2-2 draw.
There are six teams in each pool and the top four go through, so it’s a commanding start by Team GB. A win here would put them in a highly promising position.
Giannis Antetokounmpo suffers defeat despite late rally
And it’s all wrapped up at the Pierre-Mauroy stadium in Villeneuve-d’Ascq as Spain beat Greece 84-77 in Pool A.
That’s Spain’s first win but it’s back-to-back defeats for Greece, who face Australia in their final match.
The Greeks had clawed it back to be within a couple of points of their opponents at one stage but the Spaniards held on.
More great photos from across the Games
A strong start for Jack Draper
Jack Draper is 4-3 up with the match on serve against the USA’s Taylor Fritz, who is 12th in the ATP rankings.
The Brit beat Kei Nishikori 6-1, 6-4 in the first round to reach this stage.
Nishikori must be glad to see the back of the Brits after the doubles capitulation against Murray and Evans.
WATCH: Devastated Lucy Renshall ireacts as she is dumped out of the -63kg judoka
Heartbreak and tears for Walsall’s Lucy Renshall (in white) as she crashes out of the judoka -63kg last 16 to Austia’s Lubjana Piovesana. She was crying afterwards, disconsolate. This meant so much.
After beating Katharina Haecker, she could not make through.
‘It’s such a cruel sport. The last 12 weeks have been the best 12 weeks of training I’ve ever done. I felt I had more to give.
‘It’s quite a rubbish fight because you know each other so well. She was better.
‘I came here for a medal so no, not really (I’m not proud).’
DAN EVANS: What Andy Murray is REALLY like
Fancy an exclusive column from Andy Murray’s doubles partner Dan Evans, anybody?
Britain’s number three has spilled the juice on what the Scot is like away from the cameras and back in the Olympic village.
They’re against Sander Gille and Joran Vliegen in the round of 16 today after an incredible escape act against Kei Nishikori and Taro Daniel, recovering from five match points down.

Emma Wilson leads women’s windsurfing so far
Great Britain’s Emma Wilson will be happy with her start in the windsurfing as she tops the rankings, though she’s not on the water right now.
She won a race and came second in another yesterday as she took the water by storm.
Marseille is our venus for this one, with the water rather choppy today.
Could Giannis be set for another defeat?
Former NBA champion Giannis Antetokounmpo is between a rock and a hard place with Greece in the basketball group stages.
Having lost their first match against Canada 86-79, they’re now down 59-49 towards the end of the third quarter against Spain. A disastrous second-quarter defeat of 28-13 could have cost them this one.
He’s regarded as one of the best players in history, but is the ‘Greek Freak’ staring down the barrel at an early exit?
Could the triathlon be ‘turned into a duathlon’?
Well, this would be a radical move.
Sky News are reporting that organisers are considering converting the triathlon event into a duathlon due to the unsafe levels of pollution in the River Seine.
If it happens, what a huge blow to any athletes who consider the swimming section their best segment – or for any who are particuarly bacteria-loving…
Lower down in this blog, you’ll find our report about how the triathlon has already been postponed.
Indian history made with the pistols
Jubilant scenes over at the shooting centre in Chateauroux this morning as Serbia claimed gold in the 10m air pistol mixed team event.
It was silver for Turkey and bronze for India.
India’s Manu Bhaker, who won bronze in the women’s individual event, became her country’s first multi-medallist at an Olympic Games since the country’s independence in 1947.
Matt Richards: I held off to reserve energy
‘Wanted to do something different this year and try to ease through the rounds. Definitely close for comfort but we’re through.
‘Conserve as much energy as possible and do the same in the semis later but much faster.’
He claims he got almost eight hours of sleep after the excitement of last night’s silver – not bad going.
Narrow margins cost Whittle
The best 16 times make it through to the semi-final for the men’s 100m freestyle.
Jaco Whittle’s time was the 18th-fastest. So close. for the 19-year-old.
Remarkably, he’s at his second Olympics Games, and you suspect it won’t be his last.
Matt Richards squeezes into men’s 100m freestyle semis – but Jacob Whittle is ELIMINATED
A tricky morning for the British men in the pool.
Matthew Richards finished fifth out of eight men in heat 10 but his time was just good enough to scrape into tonight’s semi-finals.
No such luck for Jacob Whittle, who also finished fifth in heat nine. He was 0.07 seconds slower than Richards but did not make it.
A fencer wins Olympics match – seven months pregnant!
Egyptian fencer Nada Hafez has revealed that she was seven months pregnant when she claimed a shock victory over Elizabeth Tartakovsky of the United States to advance to the last-16 at the Olympics on Monday.
Despite carrying the tot, she won her first match 15-13 before being eliminated by by South Korea’s Jeon Hayoung.
A great story of resilience.

Kristof Milak and Leon Marchand advance
World record holder for the men’s long course 200m butterfly Kristof Milak is through his heat.
Not his greatest showing but he got the job done and eased off at the end having been comfortable with his advantage.
Next up: French favourite Leon Marchand. He only manages to come second in his heat but is through.
Are they on a collision course for the final?

Men’s triathlon and surfing POSTPONED
A really important one in case you’ve missed it.
The men’s triathlon has been postponed due to – no surprises here – worries about the River Seine’s water quality.
Despite spending around £1billion to try and clear it up, a 3.30am inspection found that pollution levels were still too high for it to be safe.
Meanwhile, over in Tahiti, the surfing if off for now due to ‘adverse weather conditions’. That impacts the men’s and women’s quarter-finals.

Ireland reach men’s double sculls final
Hats off to Daire Lynch and Philip Doyle, who have made Thursday’s final for the men’s double skulls after beating second-placed USA by over a second.
Germany had been in the lead early on but are heartbroken after slipping out of contention and missing out on the final.
Shooters in action this morning
Good luck to Nathan Hales, Matthew Coward-Holley, and Lucy Hall this morning as they take part in the trap qualification for men and women respectively.
Riath Al-Samarrai’s search for the SOUL OF THE OLYMPICS
This is one of my favourite pieces Mail Sport has produced so far from Paris.
In this magnificent piece, Riath Al-Samarrai traces the stories of some of the athletes you probably won’t hear of anywhere else and the extraordinary paths they have taken to get here.

One to keep an eye on this morning
Starting this morning – the heats for the men’s 100m freestyle swimming.
We’ve got Matthew Richards and Jacob Whittle competing in that and will keep you updated with their results.
It bodes very well that Richards claimed silver in the 200m freestyle yesterday, finishing an agonising 0.02 seconds behind Romanian star David Popovici.
The medal table as it stands
Great Britain are seventh in the medal table as we speak.
The first of the gold medals came in eventing thanks to Tom McEwen and his horse JL Dublin, Ros Canter on Lordships Graffalo, and Laura Collett riding London 52.
Then, Tom Pidcock followed that up with a stunning comeback in the cross-country cycling, recovering from a 40-second deficit and a puncture to cross the line first as the French crowd booed.
What’s on the TV today?
Here’s a preview of some of the live action that you can follow on the BBC today.
Of course, you’ll want to make sure you have Mail Sport’s live blog open as well – we’ll be bringing you all the updates and reaction from the Games, as well as wider articles covering various themes, until dusk.
Great Britain qualify for women’s double skulls final
Rebecca Wilde and Mathilda Hodgkins-Byrne have qualified for the final of the women’s double skulls with a fantastic performance, only losing out to Romania.
They’re through to the Olympic final on Thursday, having only united as a pair this season.
Hardly anyone has come close to Romania since Tokyo – fabulous work. GB were one of the lowest-ranked boats here but have upset the odds.
Today’s preview with Sir Steve Redgrave
You might have already had your breakfast by now, but it’s time for another – Mail Sport’s Olympics Breakfast Briefing with Sir Steve Redgrave. Scrumptious.
Team GB come into day four on 10 medals and Redgrave has hioghlighted the best of the action to look forward to.
Andy Murray and Dan Evans, anyone? They snatched victory from the jaws of defeat in the first round and will be up later.
