Harry Kane’s future at Tottenham may have had an influence over James Maddison’s decision to join the club.

That’s according to talkSPORT’s Ally McCoist, who believes the 26-year-old has made the ‘perfect’ move at this stage of his career.

Spurs announced the signing of Maddison from Leicester on Wednesday in a deal talkSPORT understands will amount to £40million plus add-ons.

Following the arrival of goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario, the attacking midfielder is the second signing of the Ange Postecoglou era.

However, club legend Kane has been tipped to move in the opposite direction ahead of the new season.

Manchester United have previously been linked with a move, while Bayern Munich are the latest side to show interest.

Such uncertainty could have impacted Maddison’s decision to join Spurs and when questioned on talkSPORT Breakfast if he would have asked about Kane’s future before signing, McCoist replied: “That’s an interesting one, isn’t it?

“You would have to think that’s a question that Maddison would have asked, wouldn’t you? Whether he was given an answer or not or whether they were able to give him an answer or not is a different question in itself.

“However, if I’m Maddison and I’m signing for Tottenham, I think it’s the first question you ask.”

Maddison has joined Spurs after five successful seasons at Leicester in which he scored 55 goals and provided 41 assists in 203 appearances.

He also won the FA Cup with the Foxes, and McCoist is pleased to see the three-time England international make a move to a top six side.

“I genuinely hope and I want to see Ange do well at Spurs, I do. If he can get Spurs playing a similar brand of football that you guys enjoyed up at Celtic, I think the Spurs fans will enjoy it, I really do.

“And if you’re signing forward-thinking players of the quality of Maddison, I certainly think that will help and aid the team in forward areas.

“I think he’s a terrific player, I really do. I think he’s matured, I think at this stage right now in his career the move is perfect for him, I genuinely do. I have to say, defensively I’d still like to see Spurs tighten up a little bit.”

McCoist added: “When I think of the forward players that Maddison can play alongside and help create chances for, I think it’s a no brainer.”

Maddison’s 347 chances created in the Premier League is the third highest tally since the 2018/19 season and only beaten by Kevin De Bruyne’s 437 and Trent Alexander-Arnold’s 373.

Should Kane stay at Spurs for one more year after yet another 30-goal season, then he and his new teammate from Leicester could prove to form a clinical partnership in front of goal.
