Former Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino is being linked with the England job, which is now available after Gareth Southgate’s resignation.

There is obviously no guarantee that Mauricio Pochettino is going to be Gareth Southgate’s successor. However, if he is, that could be great news for Chelsea‘s English players.

The Blues have a whole host of England internationals who the Argentine has already worked with, including the likes of captain Reece James, Cole Palmer, Raheem Sterling and Conor Gallagher.

And a player or two will now be hoping that Pochettino gets the gig. Another former Chelsea manager, Thomas Tuchel, wants the England job, so the Three Lions could end up hiring a top coach.

Gareth Southgate overlooked Cole Palmer and Conor Gallagher

At Euro 2024, Palmer and Gallagher had to settle for roles on the bench. Gallagher started just one match in the tournament, while Palmer did not start at all.

Even so, when the Chelsea attacker was able to come on, he was able to make an impact. It was him, of course, who grabbed England’s goal in their 2-1 defeat to Spain in the final.

Simply put, Palmer and Gallagher were both overlooked by Southgate in Germany, but that was never the case at Chelsea last season under Pochettino.

Palmer made 45 appearances for the Blues, while Gallagher made 50 and even got to captain the side in the absence of James and Ben Chilwell.

Cole Palmer will want Mauricio Pochettino to replace Gareth Southgate as England manager

It could be good news for someone like Gallagher if Pochettino comes in, but perhaps even better for Palmer.

Unlike Gallagher, Palmer is competing against some of the best attackers in the world in Jude Bellingham, Phil Foden and Bukayo Saka for a spot in the team. It is arguably more of a challenge for him to become a starter for his country than his Chelsea teammate.

Having earned Pochettino’s trust and produced some truly scary numbers under him, though, Palmer will feel that he can become an important player to this England side under his former club boss.

There is little doubt, then, that the £45m Chelsea star, who produced 40 goal contributions for the Blues last term, will be hoping for Pochettino to be named as the new England manager.
