Former Chelsea manager Andre Villas-Boas has now made a surprise revelation about what he was paid during his stint at Stamford Bridge.

He told Record Portugal that his salary that came with a move to the Premier League from Portugal may not be what a lot of people expected it to be.

Villas-Boas came into Chelsea in 2011 with a lot of promise as a young, exciting coach who had experience off the back of time working under Jose Mourinho.

However, his time at the club did not last long, and he was gone within his first season at the club.

This saw former assistant manager Roberto di Matteo take over, and his impact was immeasurable as his Chelsea side went on to win their first Champions League trophy.

Villas-Boas’ move seemed to anger a number of Porto fans at the time, who were of the belief that they were building something special under him.

Villas-Boas not paid a lot at Chelsea

The now 46-year-old has stated though that he doesn’t want anyone to think that the move was done with money in mind.

He said: “There are three people who know the truth. Mr. Pinto da Costa, Mr. Antero [Henrique] and Mr. Villas-Boas. And there are three people who also knew that André Villas-Boas was fighting with interested clubs to pay FC Porto the release clause of 15 million euros.

“It should also be noted that André Villas-Boas went to Chelsea to receive half of what the highest paid coach in Portugal earns and receive little more than he earned the coach of the team that was 21 points away from FC Porto in 2010/11.

“Before talking about André Villas-Boas, Chelsea’s coach, it is necessary to have full knowledge of the universe of his exit and not believe in certain things that only some people say.

“The wound that André Villas-Boas, coach of FC Porto, left in some fans in his departure to Chelsea is irreparable. In other fans, that wound has already healed and it is these fans who welcome Villas-Boas with open arms.”

Given the fact that the Chelsea managers job is often amongst the highest paying ones in world football, it is perhaps surprising to hear that the Portuguese boss could have earnt similar money elsewhere.

Mauricio Pochettino is the current man in charge at Stamford Bridge, however there is plenty of pressure on his shoulders already in just his first campaign at the club.

It has previously been reported that some on the board are of the opinion that he should be replaced, and therefore have begun to consider new candidates.

One of the names that has recently emerged is Xavi, who is expected to leave Barcelona at the end of the season.
