Rio Ferdinand has been discussing Chelsea defender Marc Cucurella after his excellent Euro 2024 campaign.
Marc Cucurella helped Spain to win the European Championship on Sunday after his country beat England 2-1 in the final.
In fact, it was the left-back who set up Mikel Oyarzabal’s winner late in the game, which handed Luis de la Fuente’s men the trophy.
It was obviously an important attacking contribution, but it is Cucurella’s defending that has been outstanding in Germany.
Former England striker Alan Shearer thinks Cucurella had a great tournament.
Rio Ferdinand hails Marc Cucurella as the best left-back at Euro 2024
Shearer is not the only pundit who has been impressed with Cucurella.
Ferdinand has also been praising the Chelsea star and believes Spain really played to his strengths during the tournament, which helped him to excel.
Speaking on BBC One after the game, the Manchester United legend said: “Cucurella this year was ridiculed by his own supporters at Chelsea, comes here and is arguably the best left-back in the tournament.
“He was played to his strengths.”
Was Marc Cucurella really the best left-back at Euro 2024?
Cucurella really did look like the complete full-back during the Euros.
Again, while the Spaniard was involved in the goal that won his country their fourth European Championship, he was also solid defensively.
According to WhoScored, Cucurella made two tackles per game, the second-highest average in his squad. He also made 1.3 interceptions per game, which only Alex Grimaldo could better. The Bayer Leverkusen man, however, only made two appearances.
Ultimately, it is probably fair to say that Cucurella was the best left-back in Germany this summer.
Enzo Maresca will now be hoping that the Spain international can bring that kind of form back to Stamford Bridge when he returns.
If Cucurella does, then you will obviously be looking at one of the top left-backs in the Premier League and probably one of the best players in Chelsea’s squad.
