Milner has put pen to paper on a one-year deal at Brighton, who will play European football for the first time in their history next season.

He arrives with a depth of experience to his name as Roberto De Zerbi’s side look to continue their impressive rise.

De Zerbi said: “I’m very glad to welcome James to Brighton. He’s an excellent addition for us and I’m sure he will help to bring us to an even higher level.”

Technical director David Weir added: “We are delighted that James has agreed to join us after a hugely successful period at Liverpool. His experience speaks for itself with the amount of games he has played and the trophies he has won throughout a decorated career.

“These games include European competition, which will be of huge value to us as we embark on our first season in Europe. We’re looking forward to working with James when the players return for pre-season.”

Milner is currently third in the all-time Premier League appearance makers with 619, behind Gareth Barry [652] and Ryan Giggs [632].

Should he feature in 34 of Brighton’s 38 top flight games next season, then he will overtake Barry to hold top spot.

After rising through the youth ranks, Milner made his first appearances in professional football at Leeds.

He then made the switch to Newcastle in 2004 where he would spend four seasons before signing for Aston Villa and then Manchester City.

Two Premier League titles and the FA Cup would come his way at the Etihad Stadium before Liverpool came calling in 2015.

He went on to collect even more silverware at the Reds as he won every major trophy possible, including the Champions League.

Milner will now enter the twilight years of his career at a Brighton side who have surprised many over the past 12 months.
