Ian Maatsen continued his great start to life at Borussia Dortmund in last night’s win against Freiburg.

Ian Maatsen, 21, spent the first half of the season as a squad player at Chelsea. However, the Blues decided to send the youngster out on loan to Dortmund for the rest of the campaign.

The attack-minded left-back now has four wins and a draw in his opening five Bundesliga appearances in Dortmund colours.

He provided a pinpoint cross to assist a goal in his side’s 3-0 victory over Freiburg yesterday.

Maatsen starred yet again in Dortmund colours this week as he cements his spot in the Dortmund XI.

The left-back has settled so quickly at his new club since a loan switch.

Many Chelsea fans were puzzled as to why Maatsen wasn’t getting much a look-in during the first half of the season, particularly in his favoured full-back position. Now, there’s even more confusion as to why Blues head coach Mauricio Pochettino ignored him.

The Evening Standard reports that Maatsen’s got a £35million release clause in his new deal at Stamford Bridge. So, could he be convincing Dortmund to splash the cash for him in the summer?

Chelsea fans react to Ian Maatsen display

Blues supporters on social media are seriously impressed by what their 21-year-old full-back is doing since moving to Germany last month.

Here are some Chelsea fans on X discussing Maatsen’s performance on Friday night:

One fan said: “Incredible assist from Maatsen yesterday. What a player, stunning. Mad how he was treated here.”

Another claimed: “You won’t see many better crosses than that, put it on a plate. What an assist tonight for Ian Maatsen, he also hit the post, and had 95% passing accuracy. Playing in his position at Left Back and he’s showing his ability.”

A third posted: “I was laughed at and told that Ian Maatsen wasn’t good enough to play for Chelsea when I said he deserves his chance to play. Now he’s absolutely balling for Dortmund while we’re stuck with Chillwell.”

Another wrote: “Maatsen is so good.”

A fifth supporter said: “What a performance by Maatsen! Still a lot to learn but this kid has so much potential!”

Another posted: “Maatsen continuing to play well I see.”
