The Lionesses head into this summer’s tournament, co-hosted by Australia and New Zealand, as one of the favourites to lift what would be their first ever Women’s World Cup.

Sarina Wiegman’s squad has been hit hard by injuries, with captain Leah Williamson and last summer’s Euros Golden Boot winner Beth Mead among the most notable of absentees.

Only the defending champions and record four time winners USA have shorter odds than the Lionesses to win the World Cup ahead of the tournament, with England strongly expected to finish top of Group D.

Alongside Haiti, Wiegman’s side have also been drawn alongside Denmark and China in their group.

England’s best ever performance in the World Cup has been reaching the semi-finals, which they achieved in the last two tournaments, but expectations are much higher heading into this summer’s edition.

The Lionesses are winless in their last four matches ahead of Saturday’s opener, drawing three of those games including their most recent two against Portugal and Canada, which both ended goalless.

Despite the lack of wins in recent months, it must also be noted that England have only lost one of their last 32 matches since the Wiegman took charge, dating back to April 2021.

Saturday will be Haiti’s first ever match in a World Cup, for either the men’s or women’s team, qualifying by beating Chile in their inter-confederation play-off final in Auckland back in February.

Haiti have the longest odds of all the Group D teams to make it out of the group and extend their historic run which has seen them qualify for the 2023 World Cup, but Nicolas Delepine’s side have won four of their last six matches in preparation for Saturday morning.

Les Grenadieres‘ most recent pre-tournament friendly ended in defeat though as they fell 2-1 to fellow qualifiers South Korea in Seoul earlier this month.

Saturday morning’s meeting will be the first time the two sides have ever met.
