It looks like the FA will consider managers who are not English for the England job, which is good news for a couple of former Chelsea bosses.

Mauricio Pochettino and Thomas Tuchel, who both used to manage Chelsea, have been linked with the Three Lions gig following Gareth Southgate’s departure on Tuesday.

Tuchel is open to succeeding Southgate, but the FA may want to wait before appointing the German. They have a lot of good options to consider right now, which includes Pochettino.

However, if the FA want him, then they may have to act quickly. Pochettino is a candidate for the USA job as well.

FA will consider Mauricio Pochettino for England job

Anyone hoping to see Pochettino in the Wembley dugout after his time at Stamford Bridge could actually end up getting their wish.

According to journalist Simon Phillips, the FA are not going to turn down a manager just because he is not English and are ready to talk to Pochettino about replacing Southgate.

On his Substack, he said: “England will consider all nationalities, and Mauricio Pochettino will be spoken to. Graham Potter is considered one of the favourites by sources, and Eddie Howe will also be contacted.”

Some of Chelsea’s England internationals would be delighted to see Pochettino named as the new Three Lions boss. A few of them really thrived under him last season, with Cole Palmer, for example, coming up with 40 goal contributions. Pochettino was linked with the Manchester United job after his Chelsea exit.

Can Enzo Maresca get the best out of Cole Palmer like Mauricio Pochettino did?

Palmer and Pochettino seemed to have a really good relationship. Speaking to Chelsea’s official website in March, the attacker hailed his former boss as a “top manager”.

There is no reason why he cannot have the same with Enzo Maresca, someone he already knows after their time together at Manchester City.

Last season and at Euro 2024, with Palmer scoring in the final, the 22-year-old proved that he is a really talented player.

Therefore, it should not be too hard for Maresca to get him performing like how Pochettino did. Do that, and perhaps Chelsea will be able to finish in the top four and get back into the Champions League.
