The father of one manager has claimed that Chelsea were interested in hiring his son this summer.
Chelsea parted ways with Mauricio Pochettino last month, leaving the Blues in need of a new man for the Stamford Bridge dugout.
They turned to Enzo Maresca and got him, announcing the now former Leicester City boss as their new manager on Monday.
Handing him a five-year contract, Maresca was clearly the man who Chelsea wanted.
However, he was not the only name that they considered following Pochettino’s exit.
Chelsea’s interest in former Premier League manager
As they searched for a new manager, Chelsea were heavily linked with the likes of Brentford’s Thomas Frank and Roberto De Zerbi, formerly of Brighton & Hove Albion.
It also looks like Vincent Kompany was another coach with Premier League experience who Chelsea looked at.
His father, Pierre Kompany, recently claimed in an interview with La Derniere Heure that Chelsea were interested in the new Bayern Munich boss.
Discussing Vincent’s move to the Bundesliga club, Pierre said: “It was a surprise to the whole world. Well, not for me. If you look at which teams have already come knocking: last year you had Tottenham and Chelsea, now Brighton showed interest, and Chelsea again.
“But when Bayern, a club that is so well structured at all levels, comes knocking, you don’t refuse.”
Should Chelsea have appointed Vincent Kompany instead of Enzo Maresca?
Maresca is a gamble but Kompany would have been as well.
Unlike the Italian, he does have a bit of experience in the Premier League. However, his success in England has come in the Championship, just as Maresca’s has.
This season, the 38-year-old, who has been described as an “ambitious coach” by Bayern’s sporting director Christoph Freund, was relegated with his Burnley team.
Ultimately, there probably are not too many Chelsea supporters crying about the club going after Maresca over Kompany.
As for Kompany, he can still be more than pleased after landing the Bayern job, which many would argue is much bigger than the Chelsea one.
