Chelsea are being modestly represented at the current European Championships in Germany.

In truth, a lot of their players are struggling for form. Romelu Lukaku came in for plenty of criticism after his display for Belgium in their shock defeat.

Mykhailo Mudryk’s Ukraine were soundly beaten in their opening game too, although supporters were far more sympathetic after his performance.

Armando Broja, who was tipped to be Albania’s main man, was dropped yesterday in their thrilling draw with Croatia.

Instead, the story so far has mostly been about players who Chelsea sold and let leave on free transfers.

One notable top performer was N’golo Kante, who reminded everyone of his quality with an imperious performance in the middle of the park for France.

Another player who enjoyed his opening game in particular was Kai Havertz.

Kai Havertz named in team of the week

The hosts made light work of Germany in their tournament opener, with the Arsenal man scoring from the spot in the first half.

His performance as a whole got him a rating high enough to be named in the team of matchday one by WhoScored.

After a relatively underwhelming spell as a whole at Stamford Bridge, Havertz undoubtedly begun to play his best football after he had made the move to title-challenging Arsenal.

He even found the net twice against his former side, electing to celebrate when many in the past have chosen to not.

Arguably the best Chelsea performer in the opening set of fixtures was Marc Cucurella, who was perhaps a surprise inclusion in the Spain side who beat Croatia.

While there is still no security over his place at the club in the long-term, having a strong Euros would be the best possible way to prove to Enzo Maresca that he has the credentials to be considered for his side when he takes over.
