Former Chelsea defender Jason Cundy has been asked if he would rather have Phil Foden than Cole Palmer at Stamford Bridge.

Cole Palmer and Phil Foden were arguably the two best players in England last season. The former won the Premier League Young Player of the Season award, while the latter claimed the main accolade.

You can argue, though, that Palmer should have won both. After all, the 22-year-old recorded 33 goal contributions, more than any other player, including Foden.

Palmer also managed to make a huge impact at Euro 2024, scoring in the final against Spain. Tony Cascarino thinks Palmer was the best substitute at the tournament.

Cascarino, Cundy and so many other pundits have, understandably, been praising Palmer after what he has managed to accomplish at both club and international level.

Jason Cundy discusses Chelsea’s Cole Palmer and Manchester City’s Phil Foden

Former England manager Gareth Southgate preferred Foden, Jude Bellingham and Bukayo Saka over Palmer at the Euros.

Palmer did make an impact in Germany, but he actually did not start any games. For Cundy, though, he is picking the Chelsea man over Foden all day long at this moment in time.

Discussing the attacker on talkSPORT, he said: “This boy has surprised everyone. No one saw this Cole Palmer. I am going to put Pep [Guardiola] in there as well because he has absolutely exceeded any expectations and doubled it.

“What he did at Chelsea last season was quite incredible. He is a superstar, the boy, he is an absolute talent.”

When asked who he would rather have at Chelsea out of Palmer and Foden, he then went on to say: “Right now Palmer. This boy has not even started. He is a super talent and he has got such a laid-back, really wry sense of humour.”

Cole Palmer could become a key player for England

Mauricio Pochettino could be in line to replace Southgate in the Wembley dugout. It is expected that Pochettino will be contacted about the England position, which could be great news for Palmer.

It was, of course, the Argentine who trusted Palmer and got the best out of him during the 2023/24 campaign.

If he gets the England job, you would fully expect him to make Palmer an integral part of his team, just like what he did during his time at Stamford Bridge.

It could see someone like Foden have to be sacrificed. But looking at how they both performed at the Euros, it would not be unjust.
