Jason Cundy thinks one player went under the radar at Chelsea last season for how good actually he was.

It was an up and down 2023/24 campaign at Stamford Bridge, but the Blues sneaked sixth spot in the Premier League to qualify for next year’s UEFA Conference League.

There’s another new era at Chelsea next season with Enzo Maresca strongly tipped to be the replacement for Mauricio Pochettino in the dugout. Journalist Simon Johnson reports via X that Maresca’s appointment as the new head coach may be confirmed on Monday.

Jason Cundy praises Chelsea player that went unnoticed

Jason Cundy believes Chelsea’s Moises Caicedo was in superb form towards the latter stage of last season, but he didn’t get the recognition he fully deserved.

He feels like the 22-year-old midfielder’s rocky start to his debut campaign stuck in the minds of people. The reality is that he got stronger and stronger as the year went on, finishing his first Chelsea season in some top form.

Cundy told talkSPORT: “Caicedo towards the end of the season, I’ve got to tell you, there weren’t better midfielders in the country than him. He was sensational. It’s gone under the radar a little bit because of how poor the start was.”

Where will Moises Caicedo play under Enzo Maresca?

If Maresca deploys at Chelsea the 4-3-3 system he preferred at Leicester City last season, where will Caicedo operate for him?

The Ecuador international is an all-action midfielder that can do a bit of everything.

Caicedo has the quality on the ball and the defensive instincts to play as the No 6 deep-lying midfielder, which is a role that Harry Winks mastered last season for Leicester.

Alternatively, he’s got the engine and box-to-box running power to play as a No 8, similar to how Wilfred Ndidi did at the King Power Stadium.

Regardless of his starting position, The Chelsea Chronicle is predicting a big year from Caicedo during his second season with the Blues.
