Chelsea have been heavily linked with Manchester City forward Julian Alvarez, but it looks like they will find it difficult to sign him this summer.

Finishing last season with Nicolas Jackson as their only recognised striker, Chelsea are now in the market for a new No.9.

Aston Villa’s Jhon Duran could be moving to west London in the transfer window, but there has also been a lot of talk about the Blues being interested in Julian Alvarez.

Alvarez made more than 50 appearances for City last season, but he is still the second-choice striker behind Erling Haaland.

It could make a move to another top club this summer tempting.

Chelsea will keep an eye on Julian Alvarez

According to journalist Simon Phillips, Chelsea are fans of Alvarez and will monitor his situation at the Etihad.

However, his price tag could potentially prevent a deal from happening this summer.

Discussing Alvarez on his Substack, Phillips said: “There is a belief that the Alvarez fee would be too much, unless the player publicly pushes for a move.

“Chelsea obviously like Alvarez and will keep a very close eye on the situation in case something is possible, but [Benjamin] Sesko was always the priority.”

How much is Julian Alvarez going to cost?

While Alvarez may not be the No.1 forward at City, this is still someone who made over 50 appearances for them during the 2023/24 campaign.

It is no surprise, then, that he is not going to come cheap if the Premier League champions do grant him permission to leave the club.

According to GiveMeSport‘s Dean Jones, it could take £80m for Chelsea to land the Argentine.

Ultimately, it would be a bit of a surprise if Alvarez ended up at Stamford Bridge this summer.

Chelsea appear to be prioritising Duran now, which will be a much easier deal to get over the line.

It has already been claimed that Chelsea have reached an agreement with Villa to sign the Colombian.
