Chelsea defender Marc Cucurella played a big role in helping Spain win Euro 2024 after they beat England 2-1 in the final.
The left-back was a key player for Spain, missing just one game for them in the tournament. Marc Cucurella impressed Gary Lineker and many others, with the former England striker describing him as a “machine”.
He assisted Mikel Oyarzabal’s winner in the final but was also very solid defensively. His average of two tackles per match was the second highest in Luis de la Fuente’s squad, according to WhoScored.
Former Chelsea player Tony Cascarino has been discussing Cucurella following the conclusion of the European Championship.
Tony Cascarino on Marc Cucurella and Nico Williams
Cascarino was hugely impressed with Cucurella in Germany, naming him in his team of the tournament. Both the 25-year-old and his partner in crime on the left flank were in top form.
Nico Williams scored in the final, and Cascarino thinks the Athletic Bilbao winger partly owes his success to his Spain teammate.
Explaining why he included Cucurella in his team of the tournament, Cascarino said in The Times: “Left-back Marc Cucurella, Spain. He enjoyed a good end to last season with Chelsea but he still surprised many with his displays in Germany. Really helped Nico Williams a lot on Spain’s left.”
There is a possibility that Cucurella and Williams could actually link-up at Stamford Bridge. It has been claimed that Chelsea would love to sign Williams this summer.
Chelsea could have one of the best left flanks in the Premier League
If Chelsea are able to sign Williams before the transfer window closes, then that is some left side Enzo Maresca could have this upcoming season.
Cucurella has really proven himself lately as an inverted full-back for both club and country, while Williams is one of the most in-form wingers in football right now. He went into Euro 2024 already at the top of his game.
Last term, the 22-year-old scored five goals and provided 11 assists in 31 La Liga appearances for Athletic Bilbao so had quite a productive campaign. As per FBref, Williams has ranked in the 94th percentile for successful take-ons and the 93rd for progressive carries over the last year, showing just how skilful and direct he can be.
Chelsea fans would surely love to see both him and Cucurella at the Bridge this upcoming season.
