Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has left talkSPORT pundit and ex-Chelsea star Tony Cascarico in a state of shock.

The Gabon international left Chelsea this summer after he had his contract ripped up just a year into a two-year deal.

It has allowed Aubameyang to sign for Marseille on a free transfer and puts a shambolic season behind him.

The striker was brought in from Barcelona last summer for £10.5million after Thomas Tuchel wanted to reunite with him having coached him at Borussia Dortmund.

But shortly after, the German coach was sacked and he did not suit Graham Potter’s tactics, leaving the ex-Arsenal star largely on the sidelines.

And Cascarino, who played for Chelsea and Marseille, cannot believe that Aubameyang will reignite his career in France.

The former striker told Natalie Sawyer on talkSPORT: “It is a strange one, three year deal. He is 34 years old, takes him to 37.

“Honestly, I have not seen the player that shone for Arsenal when he signed just before he got his massive contract, he was a fabulous talent.

“I feel Marseille have got caught in the memory of a player that was once brilliant.

“He has never felt to me, especially in the last 18 months or two years, that he has that hunger in his belly.

“Watching him for Chelsea, he has been anonymous in games. Look, he wasn’t getting picked and he may have been unfit.

“But when he was asked to make an impact, he was on the fringe.

“Will it reignite him, going to Marseille? It is a huge football club, great support, amazing place to play football and if you do well, they adore you there.

“Dimitri Payet reignited his career, going back there. Alexis Sanchez as well. I am not sure Aubameyang can do that.”

Aubameyang scored just once in the Premier League in 15 appearances and three in all competitions.

At Arsenal, the forward was much more successful where he played for five seasons.

In total, he scored 92 times in 163 appearances, though the arrival of Mikel Arteta signalled the beginning of the end for Aubameyang, who left six months after.
