It is widely expected that Chelsea are mere hours away from naming their new manager ahead of pre-season.

All fingers are pointing to Enzo Maresca to become their next boss, with it only being a week or since Mauricio Pochettino left his role.

Eyebrows were certainly raised when the Argentine was removed from his post, with his strong end to the season see them finish in sixth in the league.

While that ended up not being enough for Europa League football, the improvements from 12 months prior were very difficult to deny.

This is why many will be left believing that the decision was made not fully based on on-the-pitch matters, and instead what was going on behind the scenes.

It has been frequently claimed that the former boss was powerless to a number of his key players being sold, including Conor Gallagher.

Pochettino wanted a say on the matter, and the ownership seemed to not be too keen to take his opinion on board.

Maresca does not want a say in transfers

However, Maresca said in his final few weeks as Leicester City manager that this was not something he was looking for as part of his role, which almost certainly went down well with those at Stamford Bridge.

He said to the Leicester Mercury: “No, no, I’m not asking for more control,” Maresca said. “Absolutely not. I’m asking just to be able to do my job that I’m being paid for. No more than that.

“It’s not even a problem. It’s just things that happen that I didn’t like during the season. You sit and you clarify. It’s like when you discuss and argue with your wife, you sit and try to clarify. It’s exactly the same.”

Maresca already has a plan for Enzo Fernandez

It has been claimed that Maresca already has a plan for a number of the first team players at the club, in particular Enzo Fernandez.

Many supporters at Stamford Bridge will believe that they have not yet seen the best out of the World Cup winner, and hope the next manager can set up a side to do just that.
