As a result, he couldn’t follow up his excellent display in England’s 2-0 win over Germany, and Lee Carsley faces a nervous wait to see if Elliott will be ready to feature against Israel.

Despite being missing against Portugal, reports indicate Elliott has already returned to the England squad.

The Liverpool midfielder’s absence in the Young Lions’ quarter-final tie came as a shock after his scintillating display against Germany last week.

Elliott scored a brilliant goal and would have surely been involved.

However, his departure was pre-planned and was family-related, but he is back and will push for a start.

His chances of being involved are likely to have increased after Aston Villa star Jacob Ramsey was seen on crutches after the Portugal game.

Speaking to the Evening Standard about their chances, he said: “We want to win,” said Elliott. “That’s our main aim, our only aim to be honest.

“We’ve got a massive group and a great bunch of lads with unbelievable talent, so who says we can’t win?

“It’s just down to us to keep applying ourselves in games, keep taking this confidence into each and every game and think we can go out there and beat anyone – which we can. We just need to keep going.”
