Astrologer Russell Grant details brain cancer battle as he praises medics who removed his tumour and saved his eyesight during five-hour operation

Russell Grant has shared an update on his brain cancer battle after he had a tumour on his pituitary gland removed before Christmas

The astrologer and TV personality, 71, thanked the ‘A-team’ of medics who completed the operation during a five-hour removal procedure in a new post.

Russell said that he is now recovering following the invasion operation as he shared the news with his Twitter followers on Tuesday.

The former Strictly Come Dancing star also honoured the ‘caring nurses’ at Alex Hospital and YG Bangor hospital who looked after him at the time.

The post read: ‘Before Christmas I had a brain tumour removed by the A-Team Prof Pathmanban, Dr Bhalla, Dr Kearney, the caring nurses & Vicky Walsh of Alex Hospital Manchester & Dr Wilton YG Bangor.

‘I’m now into recovery on @BrainTumourOrg Day. Thank you all.’

Alongside the statement, Russell posted a smiling picture of himself wearing his beloved Wealdstone FC shirt.

The post also included links to The Pituitary Foundation and Rare Disease Day, which was held on February 28.

Russell first revealed his eyesight had been saved when he underwent major surgery to remove a brain tumour in December.

He had the procedure to remove the lump from his pituitary gland after doctors said it threatened to ‘blank out’ his optic nerve.

Russell was instructed not to sneeze or blow his nose for the next six months in a bid to prevent complications.

He told the Mirror: ‘I am now on the road to recovery. There are a few complications to sort out so the post-op stuff has already started.’

Clairvoyant Russell said he foresaw health problems for himself three years ago but kept his premonition relatively quiet.

He explained: ‘As you know I saw something pretty major coming when giving my lecture in Blackpool on December 1, 2019, so I was prepared.

‘I didn’t shout about the growth as I’d been waiting for a knee operation which was due Easter 2020, so many of you would have presumed I was going in for that.

‘Covid ruined that. So it’s next on my list of things to do.’

Russell suffered heartache last year after his beloved mother Jo died at the age of 93 from coronavirus.

The former Strictly Come Dancing contestant said his mum was holding the hand of her granddaughter Joanna at the time of her passing.

Taking to Instagram last January, Russell shared a picture of himself with his mother and wrote: ‘It is with a deep and heartfelt sadness that my brother Garry and I have to tell you that our beloved mother, Jo, passed over to a better world yesterday.’

He added: ‘Nanny Jo was with her darling granddaughter, Joanna – Jo by name, Jo by nature: a chip-off-the-old-book – who held her nan’s hand and gently helped and guided her over to the other side yesterday afternoon.’

Adding a further tribute on Facebook, Grant wrote: ‘Those who knew our mum will have been embraced by her force-of-nature that brought sunshine to the many she met.

‘In the winter of her life the light she blazed for nine decades was finally extinguished by these dark times in her 93rd year.’

He also praised NHS staff who had cared for Jo at West Herts Hospitals for their ‘selfless dedication’.
