Death Stranding is set in the United States, in the aftermath of a mysterious cataclysmic event that lead to massive creatures roaming what was left of the Earth after society has crumbled.

Players control a character named Sam Bridges (portrayed in the game by Norman Reedus), who is tasked with delivering supplies to a series of isolated communities and trying to reconnect them through a wireless communications network.

The game also features the likeness and voices of a number of other established actors, with Mads Mikkelsen (Clifford Unger), Lea Seydoux (Fragile), Margaret Qualley (Mama) and director Guillermo del Toro (Deadman).

‘I couldn’t be more excited about this new partnership with Hammerstone Studios,’ Kojima said in a statement.

‘This is a pivotal moment for the franchise and I’m really looking forward to collaborating with them in bringing Death Stranding to the big screen,’ he added.

The game has sold over five million copies worldwide, and it won Best Game Direction, Score/Music and Performance for Mikkelsen at the 2019 Game Awards, out of nine total nominations.

‘We are thrilled and honored to have the opportunity to partner with brilliant and iconic Hideo Kojima on his first film adaptation,’ said Lebovici, who recently served as an executive producer on the horror hit Barbarian.

‘Unlike other big budget tentpole video game adaptations, this will be something far more intimate and grounded,’ he added.

‘Our goal is to redefine what a video game adaptation could be when you have creative and artistic freedom. This film will be an authentic ‘Hideo Kojima’ production,’ Lebovici concluded.

It’s unclear at this point if Reedus, Mikkelsen, Seydoux, Qualley or del Toro will be involved in any capacity for the film adaptation.

The news comes just one week after Kojima announced at the 2022 Game Awards that he is developing a sequel to his iconic game.
