November 2022: ‘Stealing’ Ricky Gervais’ joke
James apologised to fellow comedian Ricky Gervais after ‘inadvertently’ using his 2018 stand-up joke on his Late Late Show.
Ricky, 61, tweeted a clip from the TV host’s show on Halloween night in which Corden repeated the joke from his Netflix stand-up gig Ricky Gervais: Humanity.
Corden wrote on Twitter: ‘Inadvertently told a brilliant Ricky Gervais joke on the show last night, obviously not knowing it came from him.
‘It’s brilliant, because it’s a Ricky Gervais joke. You can watch all Ricky’s excellent specials on Netflix.’
October 2022: Clash with restaurant owner
James faced backlash for screaming at staff at the Balthazar restaurant in New York because his wife received an egg yolk omelette with egg white in it.
He branded a ‘tiny cretin of a man’ and banned last year by Keith McNally, the owner of New York restaurant Balthazar, who claimed he is the ‘most abusive customer ever’.
McNally announced on Instagram that Corden was banned from the restaurant as punishment for rude and childish behaviour on two occasions.
On the first occasion, Corden was upset that a hair had been found in his food and demanded free drinks to make up for it, according to McNally.
The second occasion involved his wife Julia ordering an egg-yolk omelette and receiving a plate with egg white on it. The final straw was when the remade omelette was sent out with a side of home fries instead of salad.
Corden later apologised for his behaviour and Keith lifted his ban.
October 2022: Snaps at a reporter
The talk-show host snapped at a New York Times reporter who asked him about his omelet incident.
He broke his silence as he told the NY Times journalist that speaking about the ordeal was ‘beneath your publication’.
The reporter, Dave Itskoff, appeared grateful Corden hadn’t called off the interview to which the comedian responded: ‘I haven’t done anything wrong, on any level. So why would I ever cancel this? I was there. I get it.
‘I feel so Zen about the whole thing. Because I think it’s so silly. I just think it’s beneath all of us. It’s beneath you. It’s certainly beneath your publication.’
December 2020: Slammed for ‘stereotyped’ portrayal of a gay man
Corden came under furious fire for his ‘horrifically bad’ portrayal of a gay Broadway star in new Netflix movie The Prom.
Corden’s performance has been slammed as ‘gross and offensive’, with viewers blasting Netflix for failing to cast a gay actor in the role.
In the movie, which was directed by American Horror Story creator Ryan Murphy – who is himself gay – Corden plays the role of Barry Glickman, struggling to maintain his Broadway career.
‘The main, and huge, drawback [to The Prom] is James Corden,’ Erik Anderson, founder of awards-focused website AwardsWatch, wrote on Twitter.
‘His performance is gross and offensive, the worst gayface in a long, long time. It’s horrifically bad.’
2017: Fails to name cameramen on his show
In October, video resurfaced of Corden failing to name a single cameraman from his own show in 2017.
He had invited fellow comedian Jimmy Kimmel on to the show in 2017 for a segment called Spill Your Guts. It consisted of Kimmel asking Corden questions, and Corden eating or drinking unappetizing dishes if he failed to answer.
‘Name two of the cameramen in this room,’ Kimmel asked in one portion.
‘That is a great question,’ giggled Corden, before replying that it was a ‘different crew tonight, actually’ and reaching for a fish smoothie.
2017: ‘Using’ Noel Fielding’s material
Noel Fielding also accused the star of using ‘my material’, tweeting an allegation from a fan that Corden had ‘totally stole’ his joke about distracting an armed robber by whispering.
On stage at the Just for Laughs Festival in Montreal in 2010, Mr Fielding sent the audience into hysterics when he suggested the best way to put off a thief in London is to whisper: ‘Oi mate’, because the ‘rules’ mean they will put down their blade and respond with a hushed tone: ‘What is it?’.
In December 2017 James Corden was interviewing Matthew Broderick, who described being robbed. Mr Corden said ‘the best way to get out of being mugged’ is to whisper: ‘You’re never going to believe what’s happened’. Mimicking an attacker lowering a weapon, he said: ‘Because they go like this: ‘What?’, adding: ‘And it gives you time, you just bolt’.
October 2017: Makes Weinstein jokes
He wrote in two tweets: ‘To be clear, sexual assault is no laughing matter. I was not trying to make light of Harvey’s inexcusable behavior, but to shame him, the abuser, not his victims. I am truly sorry for anyone offended, that was never my intention.’
His apology comes after he was condemned on social media for jokes he made at the amfAR Gala, which he hosted. The audience of A-listers reacted to his jokes with a mixture of groans and applause.
After making a crude Weinstein joke, he said: ‘If you don’t like that joke, you should probably leave now.’
He was condemned by the likes of Rose McGowan and Anthony Bourdain for his joke.
August 2017: Branded a ‘k**bhead’
In an interview with GQ magazine, Liam Gallagher appeared to hit out at Corden, branding him a ‘k**bhead’ before mistaking him for starring on Harry Enfield comedy Kevin and Perry.
The Oasis star was asked whether he would like to join James and appear on the now-famous Carpool Karaoke.
‘No, thank you very much,’ he responded when asked about joining James onscreen, before awkwardly adding: ‘No f**king chance mate,’ and mistaking him for starring on Kevin and Perry.
Admitting he hasn’t watched Gavin and Stacey, he added: ‘I don’t need to watch it to know I won’t like it, James Corden is a k**bhead.’
June 2010: Clash with Patrick Stewart
Corden had a very public spat with Patrick Stewart on the podium of the 2010 Glamour Awards.
Stewart had accused Corden of doing his hosting job badly, accusing him of ‘looking around as if you would rather be anywhere in the world but here’.
Corden hit back with: ‘Oh! You couldn’t be more wrong, sir. You couldn’t be more wrong. Genuinely. And if it looked like that, I’m so sorry. But when you come up and present an award, just f***ing get on with it.’
Stewart then added: ‘From where I was, I could see your belly and that was from right at the back of the room.’
But Corden retorted: ‘I’m waiting for the punchline. Go on. No, seriously, go on. No, go on! You could see my belly, and we can all see you dying right now.’
